Status report

This page will detail footpath problems that are reported to me. A 'footpath problem' is not a problem until it has been reported to the County Council (see the footpaths & access page again). Then, and only then, please report it to me for inclusion in this report. I will be very interested in the response, especially if they say that it is fixed.

    1. A broken bridge and stile at SP539679, between Braunston and Barby. Fixed by 10th April.
  • Reported on 23rd January, 2003 to Milton Keynes: There is no stile at SP 808457, south of Hanslope, just an increasingly wobbly fence. I first reported this in 1996! Still not fixed in May 2003. Eventually found fixed on 12th July 2005.
  • Reported on 5th November, 2002: a missing footpath that should cross the stream at SP 612554 near Farthingstone. A diversion with new bridge has been proposed, which avoids going through a private garden. Reported fixed on 11th August 2007.

Response on 4th July 2008: I went out to site yesterday and found the stile that you described, which I can now inform you has been repaired. Nick Wedgbrow.

  • Reported on 12th July 2005 to Northamptonshire: problems in the Tiffield / Astcote area:-
    2. The section of the Eastcote to Flitton Hills Farm path from SP685535 to SP685531 is unusable, because the headland is completely overgrown. This is exacerbated by the rape, but I could not even find the entrance at the south end.
    3. The stile at the dismantled railway at Tiffield, SP697519, is rather precarious. It is a long way down from it, and you are expected to balance on the end of a stump.     Map for all three.
  • Reported on 14th July 2005 to Northamptonshire: problems in the Moreton Pinkney area:-
    1. Only half a stile at SP574494 where the footpath from Eydon enters the Moreton Pinkney housing. There is also a lack of waymarking here just where it is most needed. Map.

At 635535, on the Knightley Way south of Litchborough, no path through the crop.
At 719556, on the road between Gayton and Gayton Marina, signpost for the footpath to Rothersthorpe not visible from the road.
  • Reported on 10th October 2006 to Northamptonshire: problems in the Hollowell area:-
                Map for all five
    A. SP 699727. On the path from Cottesbrooke to the Welford Road. The gate onto the Welford Road has been thoroughly bolted and pinned so that it cannot be opened.

    D. SP 687721. No finger post at the steps for the path from Hollowell to the crossroads.

                Map for all three
Whilst reconnoitering a walk for the Ramblers' Association on the footpath from the north side of Pitsford Water across the fields to Brixworth, I encountered two stiles in a bad condition and one completely missing.
The damaged stiles are at grid reference SP769703 and SP767704. The missing stile is at SP 765705.

  • Reported on 10th August 2007 to Northamptonshire:-
At SP754460, on the path south-west from Grafton Regis. Map
    A. The route through the hedge at point A is blocked by a trailer.
B&C. The fields between Grafton Regis and this point have now been harvested, but the first field (B) had obviously been inadequately cleared if at all, and the second field (C) not cleared.
    D. There are two stiles just past the bungalow at point D (SP754459): the first one has rusty nails sticking out of it, and the second has barbed wire across it.
    E. The gate at point E (SP754455), where the path from Grafton Regis joins the bridleway, does not open.

    Reply on 15th July:
    1. The relevant landowner has been contacted and asked to re-instate the footpath through the crop that leaves the Kislingbury to Gayton road at SP705554 within 14 days.
    2. The temporary electric fence across the next field at SP703552 will also be removed within 14 days.
Also, for your information, the 7.5metre footbridge across the watercourse between these two fields will be replaced by our contractors as soon as possible.
    3. The relevant landowner has been contacted and asked to re-instate the footpath that runs NE of Gayton Church through the crops at SP707550 within 14 days.
    4. The landowner will also repair the broken stile at the end of this field at SP708551
    5. The footpath from Northampton Arm Lock 10 at SP725568 has been cleared to ensure that walkers can now use the footpath.
