This so-called Golden Path in West Oxfordshire, created in 2001, was at the centre of a legal tussle for more than a decade, but in a major victory for the walking public, Lord Rotherwick decided not to pursue his appeal for compensation against Oxfordshire county council. The case was originally brought by Lord Rotherwick's late father who claimed £1.6 million for interference to his land. The case was considered by the Lands Tribunal which decided that the maximum period during which debts of this kind are legally enforceable had expired. Lord Rotherwick said he would take the case to the Court of Appeal, but the appeal was discontinued and the council was paid costs with interest. Steve Sayers.
