Otmoor. Circular day walk of 12 miles. Car-share from The Turnpike, Harpole Turn, Weedon Road at 07:00 for a walk starting from Charlton-on-Otmoor church SP 562158. Lunch alfresco. Otmoor is a strange and unexpected 4000 acres of wetland, now partly an SSSI and RSPB reserve, so no dogs please. Can be wet and muddy. It is hoped to follow the course of a Roman road through the heart of Otmoor but this will depend on whether the firing range is in use. If it is, the perimeter path will be used, which has the advantage of being drier. (Otmoor can be VERY wet after rain.) There is speculation that the area was drier in Roman times than it is now; severe winter flooding may only have occurred after an earthquake in 1666 either lowered the land or raised the level of outflow of the River Ray. Otmoor is thought to mean the Fen of Otta but his origins are unknown. As early as the 14th century villagers from the marshes travelled to the market town of Islip to sell fish and wildfowl but the marshland was enclosed and drained early in the 19th century when the New River Ray was dug. The commoners' rights of hunting and grazing were revoked and this led to the Otmoor Riots. The drainage was never very successful, but further work took place after WW2, and only the central wet meadows then remained. The RAF has owned large areas since 1920 and it was used for bombing practice until 1958; there is still an active firing range. The RSPB acquired large parts of Otmoor in 1995 and significant areas of arable land are being returned to wetland. It is now an outstanding area for birdlife with about 150 species sighted here. Steve Sayers.
