On Saturday 30th April at 09:45 a motley crew of 12 ramblers was observed to be assembling at
Doncaster North service station on the M18. It was later reported that they were on their way to
Cloughton in Yorkshire for four days of revelry, culture and perambulation.
The culture was provided by a visit on the Saturday evening to the Stephen Joseph Theatre in
Scarborough, where the last night of an Alan Ayckbourn production of ‘Private Fears in Public
Places’ was presented in the round. A thoroughly enjoyable evening’s entertainment was had by all.
The perambulation consisted of some excellent walking along the coastline and moor of North
Yorkshire; taking in Ravenscar (which is burnt into the memory of the Lyke Wake walkers), Robin
Hood’s Bay (for all Coast to Coasters) and Whitby.
Chris and Jill Eilbeck had meticulously planned the entire four days including their uncanny knack
of pre-ordering some fine spring weather, which was only marred by the early arrival of a
thunderstorm as we approached Whitby Abbey on the Monday. Their excuses about a fine photo
opportunity were not convincing.
