 Lincolnshire Wolds  17th - 20th July, 2004

This very successful venture into the Lincolnshire Wolds was full of variety, choice and surprises. The biggest surprises were the beauty of the landscape, the steepness of the hills and the lovely villages and views. Most of us stayed at the very well re-modelled self-catering youth hostel of Woody's Top, visiting two local hostalries for evening meals with delicious fish and chips at the hostel on the third night.
The first walk started at Walesby at the northern end of the Wolds where we were treated to our first views of the Lincolnshire countryside, with a glimpse of Lincoln Cathedral on the horizon and fields of hazy blue borage in the Bain valley. The river Bain follows the Wolds and was crossed on our walk from Donnington-on-Bain the next day. Not a mighty river! The Viking Way also follows the wolds and was part of our path on many occasions. The "ramblers' church" at Walesby was spotted on our first day and visited on the Monday walk. It contains a stained glass window donated by and dedicated to ramblers and was one of the many churches visited in the area, including Somersby the birthplace of Tennyson.
The walks were full of interest with an opportunity to visit other places for those who wanted a "rest" day. We enjoyed good food, good leadership and good company.
