It is not often that you leave a snowy Northampton to go to an area where they had not had any,
but that is exactly what several of us did when we set off for Thixendale for 2 days of walking in
the heart of the Wolds. Expecting the worst, weather-wise, I think we were all pleasantly surprised
that we got away with just a couple of fierce showers each day. The scenery through which we
walked and the long views were stunning. Space does not permit a detailed description of our
accommodation, but 4 of us enjoyed excellent hospitality at the local pub, whilst the 7 who stayed
at the B&B were amused to find that the sleeping arrangements were just a bit unconventional. They
had nothing but praise for the establishment, however. and I am sure they will take great pleasure
in telling their story for years to come!
The walking itself was superb. About 12 miles on Saturday and 10 on Sunday with not a little up
and down. A lunchtime pub stop on the Saturday and a tea-room on the Sunday as always proved most
welcoming whilst helping out the local economy. On our walk on Saturday we met the local Hunt and
found out afterwards (from Emma, the daughter of the B&B hostess who was riding out with them) that
no less a person than Prince William was amongst the riders who doffed their hats to us as they
swept past. Unfortunately, for Emma, he did not attend the Hunt Ball that night, but as she did not
arrive home until midway through breakfast, it seems she still managed to enjoy herself!
Once again, on behalf of all of us, thanks to Clive Williams for organising a great weekend.
