The Hindhead YH has been converted from a small terrace of National Trust cottages and lies deep
in the heart of the Devil's Punchbowl. Eleven of us descended on this idyllic spot for 2 days of
walking organised by Clive Williams. We had the hostel to ourselves, and self-catered for the
breakfasts and Saturday evening meal - a huge plateful of spaghetti bolognaise with garlic bread
and fresh fruit for dessert.
On the Saturday we did a 12 mile circular walk taking in various viewpoints and scenic spots
around the rim of the Bowl and passing through some lovely nearby villages. Naturally a welcoming
pub enjoyed our custom at lunchtime, and the day ended in glorious sunshine, more than making up
for the rather misty start.
Sunday saw us making the short journey to the Visitor Centre at Frensham Great Pond for a walk
incorporating the villages of Frensham and Tilford where the Barley Mow at the side of the village
green satisfied the need for some light refreshments. The weather was lovely and the long, wide
beach alongside the Pond was of the deepest and finest sand, rivalling any seaside resort -
astonishing to the initiated.
Many thanks to Clive for putting on this very enjoyable and memorable weekend.
